The crested goshawk, proud and grand,
With a gray-plumed crown so bold it stands.
Wings spread wide in sovereign flight,
Birds and rats flee out of sight.

The crested goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus) is a medium-sized bird of prey belonging to the order Accipitriformes and the family Accipitridae. It is a unique subspecies endemic to Taiwan and classified as a Category II protected species.
Measuring 40–48 cm in body length with a wingspan of 74–90 cm, this diurnal raptor is a resident bird. The male is named for its short crest atop its head. Key identifying features include a smoothly rounded trailing edge on the wings, indistinct finger-like projections at the wingtips, and fluffy white undertail coverts. During flight, it exhibits a distinct wing-fluttering motion while pressing its wings downward to mark its territory.
The crested goshawk primarily inhabits low-altitude hilly regions, though some have adapted to urban green spaces. Its breeding season spans from Feburary to May, during which it builds nests in the canopy and lays two eggs per clutch. After hatching, the female takes charge of rearing the chicks, while the male is responsible for hunting and defending the nest.

“Yesterday, while the children were having class in the Wind and Rain Classroom, a raptor accidentally flew in and perched on the beam. It has stayed there all night and hasn’t moved even until this afternoon. How can we help it fly out safely?” Director Mai asked with a troubled expression.
“If there’s really no other way, how about catching a chicken to lure it out?” Teacher Dino suggested, glancing at the bustling chicken coop on campus and coming up with an idea.

Before long, I accompanied a fully armed, confident little student to the chicken coop to carry out the mission. Together, we successfully “captured” an unfortunate hen.
First, we placed the hen outside the Wind and Rain Classroom, on the corridor, using it as bait. It clucked softly—cluck, cluck, cluck—as if sensing something unusual. However, even after an hour had passed, the raptor remained completely unfazed, perched high on the 10-meter beam, unmoving and unbothered.

Next, we decided to move the hen inside the Wind and Rain Classroom, placing it directly on the floor. This time, the poor hen froze completely, as still as a wooden chicken. Another hour passed in a tense standoff.
The children, growing impatient, tried amplifying the hen’s clucking through a microphone. But now, all that could be heard was its timid, trembling cluck… murmur…, as if it, too, had resigned to its fate.

Seeing this, Director Mai grew anxious as well. Unable to hold back, she decided to showcase her vocal mimicry skills on the spot. Clasping her hands together and pursing her lips, she exhaled sharply—Woo-woo… woo-woo…—a series of loud, echoing owl calls filled the vast Wind and Rain Classroom.
Unfortunately, the unshaken raptor remained completely indifferent. With no other ideas left, the group had no choice but to return the exhausted and thoroughly frightened hen to the chicken coop.

The next day, the school invited a veterinarian from the Taoyuan Wild Bird Society to assist with capturing the raptor. At first, the veterinarian cautiously approached the bird, waving a long-handled net from side to side. Sensing danger, the raptor took flight several times, shifting positions before finally hiding inside the steel beam structure.
Seeing this, Director Mai quickly stepped in to help. Despite her petite frame, she lifted the long-handled net with all her strength, while the veterinarian climbed an A-frame ladder, then continued scaling the steel beams by hand. Reaching the top, he carefully reached into a narrow gap, grabbed the raptor, and swiftly secured it inside the net.
Once the weakened bird was safely transferred from the net to a cardboard box, Director Mai curiously asked, “Who is it?”
The veterinarian announced its identity: “It’s a crested goshawk.”
